Warmer weather is a welcomed by some athletes and can provide significant challenges for others. This is because some bodies are better tuned for managing environmental heat than others. Our body is finely tuned to keep us safe and maintain homeostasis in a variety of environments and conditions, but when these environments change suddenly it can provide a significant stress to the system. The good news is that this stress is exactly what we need to signal adaptations in our body to better handle this new environment (i.e. summer heat).
Heat adaptation (or acclimatization) is a biological adaptation that reduces physiological strain (e.g., heart rate and body temperatures), improves comfort, improves exercise capacities and reduces the risks of serious heat illness during exposure to heat stress.
Through repeated exposure to heat, your physiological responses adjust. This enables you to better regulate temperature, conserve electrolytes, and maintain performance in challenging conditions.
Integrate heat adaptation into your training regimen gradually, starting several weeks before your target race or event. Incorporate heat exposure sessions 2-3 times per week, gradually increasing duration and intensity. Monitor your progress and adjust your plan based on how your body responds.
